SHAH ALAM - The question has always been open to criticism whether
students should be kept at arm’s length from politics or they should be allowed
to take an active part in politics.
Recently, our nation was shock with the rise of students who
tent to fights about their political right. Our country was threatened by riots
by students who supposedly want justice for students. They wanted our
government to pay attention on what they want and they also proposed to abolish
the PTPTN.
Students’ demands and their bold expression of opinion can
cause chaos towards the country and render national unrest. They tend to act
aggressively when they did not get what they want. If this happened, what will
happen to our country?
Students today are one of our future leaders. Do we want our
leader comes from a rotten background? Students are the backbone of the society
and if they are not brought up properly, the future of the society will be
darkened.
They have nothing to do with the politics of the country and they have to devote their full attention to their physical, mental, intellectual and spiritual growth.
An amendment to the Universities and University Colleges (Amendment) Bill 2012 allows university students to hold positions in both political parties and campus organizations. By the amendments, students may participate in politics legally.
However, under the proposed changes, a student may not run for or hold any post in a campus organization if he holds a position in a political party he or she can only be an ordinary member.
Higher Education Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said it was up to each university to monitor their students to ensure that they abided by the changes once it became law. The students should know what is allowed as ignorance of the law is not an excuse.
On the clause which barred students who held positions in political parties from contesting for positions in campus organizations, Mohamed Khaled said it was to ensure the political neutrality of campus organizations.
University students can fight for their right but, they have to make sure that they follow the rules that made by the government and use the right channel to voice out their opinion.
